Appnext · OEM Discovery · Mobile Attribution · Retention Quality

An install is only the first recommendation.
Retention proves whether the discovery was relevant.

Appnext combines on-device and in-app discovery with its AI-powered Timeline technology. For an app-growth team, the opportunity is reaching users at contextual moments throughout the mobile journey — while measuring whether every install becomes an activated, retained, and valuable user.

Discovery layers: directly on the device and inside mobile apps

1

Source of truth: the advertiser-controlled MMP and backend ledger

Evidence boundary. Appnext publicly lists major OEM partners and describes its reach, technology, and integrations. Exact inventory, device surfaces, pricing, attribution parameters, event availability, and placement controls must still be confirmed for the advertiser's live account and insertion order.

Discovery architecture

The product is not a single ad placement — it is a sequence of app-discovery moments.

Appnext positions Timeline as a patented AI system that predicts the app a user is most likely to engage with next. Its platform combines on-device and in-app recommendation layers.

On-device discovery

Recommendations embedded in the mobile journey.

Appnext describes device-level opportunities spanning initial setup and continued discovery surfaces such as app stores, folders, banners, video, splash screens, and contextual recommendations. Availability depends on the OEM, market, and commercial programme.

In-app discovery

Recommendations inside existing mobile experiences.

Contextual app discovery appears within participating apps, extending reach beyond device setup. Treat it separately from OEM inventory because placement intent, creative context, device mix, and post-install behaviour can differ.

Timeline operating model

Context becomes useful only when it can be connected to downstream value.

01 · CONTEXT

Discovery moment

Device, app environment, time, market, surface, and available privacy-safe signals.

02 · PREDICT

Recommendation

Timeline predicts relevance and performance for an eligible app recommendation.

03 · INSTALL

Attributed acquisition

The user reaches the store, installs, and first opens the advertised app.

04 · ACTIVATE

Meaningful use

Registration, onboarding, key feature use, purchase, or another validated event.

05 · LEARN

Quality feedback

MMP and backend data inform source, placement, campaign, and cohort decisions.

MMP connection

Use the official partner module — not a manually invented tracking template.

Appnext maintains current support documentation for both AppsFlyer and Adjust. The safest setup starts from the verified partner record, then grants only the event and revenue access required for the campaign.

Default outcomesConfigure install postbacks and the agreed click / view lookback windows. The enabled integration can receive install, session, uninstall, reinstall, and event callbacks when configured.Record attribution definitions in the launch sheet before spend begins.
In-app eventsSelect events, postback window, source scope, and whether values / revenue are included.Link each event to a preset or custom Appnext event name.Begin with the smallest event set correlated with value.
RevenueShare values and revenue only for validated monetary events and when authorised.Link at least one revenue event before enabling in-app revenue forwarding.Send currency and settled value consistently; exclude test and duplicate transactions.
Broader data“All media sources including organic” is broader than partner-attributed users.Session, uninstall, reinstall, and parameter forwarding require deliberate configuration.Do not enable broad sharing merely because the interface permits it.

Do not hard-code an unverified AppsFlyer partner ID, Appnext click macro, Adjust parameter, or attribution URL. Generate the current link inside the verified partner workflow and follow the account-specific Appnext launch instructions.

Signal ladder

Optimise beyond the install without flooding the platform with noise.

Each event should have a precise trigger, stable name, deduplication key, consent basis, and commercial meaning. Illustrative names below must be mapped to the actual app schema.

EVENT 01

Install / first open

Establishes attributed acquisition and starts CTIT measurement.

Quality question

Did the install occur through a credible path for this app size, network, device, and market?

EVENT 02

Registration / onboarding

Distinguishes a usable new user from an install that never reaches the product.

Quality question

Does the placement produce completed activation rather than opens or starts?

EVENT 03

Core product action

Examples include search, transaction setup, level completion, item added, or first meaningful session.

Quality question

Is the event genuinely predictive of retained use for this app vertical?

EVENT 04

Purchase / subscription

Validated revenue with currency, transaction identity, and refund handling.

Quality question

Does gross revenue survive approval, cancellation, refund, and fraud review?

EVENT 05

D1 / D7 retention or value

Cohort outcome that reveals whether discovery created ongoing product use.

Quality question

Does the cohort retain and monetise relative to its acquisition cost and control traffic?

CTIT analysis

Use distributions to find anomalies — never one universal seconds threshold.

Click-to-install time depends on app size, store behaviour, connection, device performance, whether the app was preinstalled or offered during setup, deep linking, and the user's actual journey. AppsFlyer explicitly warns that an uncalibrated CTIT rule can create false positives.

Very short cluster

Possible last-touch hijacking.

A dense spike immediately before first open may be consistent with click injection, but small apps, preinstall flows, already-downloaded packages, or special device journeys can also shorten CTIT. Compare with the app × GEO × device baseline and MMP fraud evidence.

Flat long tail

Possible click flooding.

A diffuse attribution tail without a normal response peak can indicate opportunistic click coverage. Check click volume, conversion probability, attribution window, source overlap, and MMP rejection reasons before acting.

Stable cohort shape

Credible, not automatically clean.

A repeatable CTIT distribution aligned with comparable placements is encouraging, but it must still connect to real sessions, accepted events, retention, revenue, and fraud diagnostics.

Safer deployment: AppsFlyer supports a Tagged mode for testing validation rules against live traffic without blocking attribution. Use observation first, quantify false positives, then implement only calibrated conditions.

Retention quality

D1 and D7 are cohort evidence — not universal pass/fail numbers.

D1 is weak across all placements.
Investigate onboarding, crashes, store expectation, creative-to-product mismatch, permissions, device compatibility, and market localisation before blaming the media source.
One placement drops sharply by D7.
Compare activation depth, session quality, uninstall rate, revenue, device models, app versions, and acquisition context. The source may produce curiosity installs without durable need.
Retention is unusually flat.
Check whether the metric is calculated correctly, whether scheduled or duplicate events are being counted, and whether suspiciously regular sessions appear across devices. Flatness alone is not proof of automation.
Retention is healthy but CPI is high.
Model payback and cohort LTV. A more expensive placement can still be the better acquisition source if retained value exceeds the incremental cost.
Install volume is high, activation is zero.
Verify event implementation first. If measurement is healthy, treat this as a severe intent mismatch and restrict the placement within the commercial loss limit.

Placement decision system

Combine fraud status, activation, retention, and economics before changing supply.

01

Verify reporting identity.

Confirm that source, placement, campaign, device, OEM surface, and creative identifiers survive the Appnext-to-MMP mapping. A missing dimension cannot support a blacklist.

02

Separate blocked, rejected, and accepted events.

Do not calculate CPI, CPA, or ROAS from a mixed numerator. Reconcile MMP fraud decisions and backend validation before assessing placement economics.

03

Require a minimum cohort.

Set an evidence floor appropriate to the app's conversion rate and event lag. A few installs cannot establish a stable D7 retention rate.

04

Diagnose before blocking.

Distinguish technical breakage, incompatible devices, creative mismatch, low intent, and likely fraud. Each problem demands a different correction and reconciliation path.

05

Scale accepted cohort value.

Promote placements only after CTIT credibility, activation, retention, revenue, and margin remain healthy as volume increases.

Six-stage rollout

From integration to quality-led OEM scale.

01 · VERIFY

Confirm inventory and terms.

Markets, OS, OEM / in-app surfaces, billing event, optimisation goal, attribution, reporting, privacy, fraud, and support.

02 · INSTRUMENT

Build the event taxonomy.

Install, activation, product event, purchase, retention, revenue, currency, deduplication, and backend acceptance.

03 · CONNECT

Activate the official MMP module.

Partner identity, permissions, postback scope, event mapping, revenue, windows, impression attribution, and test device.

04 · PILOT

Limit the first learning surface.

Narrow markets and device groups, clear placement IDs, spend caps, stable creative, and a predefined observation period.

05 · VALIDATE

Read CTIT and retention together.

Tagged fraud rules, baseline distributions, D1 / D7 cohorts, rejected outcomes, technical diagnostics, and placement decisions.

06 · SCALE

Expand profitable discovery.

Increase reach only where accepted CPI / CPA, activation, retention, revenue, and marginal payback remain inside guardrails.

OEM reach creates distribution. Retained value creates growth.

We connect Appnext to a measurable event system, calibrate CTIT and retention by real cohorts, isolate weak placements, and scale only the discovery moments that create durable users.
